The Dragonfly Chiffon Gown

Hand-painted dragonflies unfurl their wings.

Matthew Williamson SS14 Dragonfly Chiffon Twisted Collar GownJust as when a dragonfly flits past – its colour catches the sunlight but you cannot quite decipher the pattern – this gown caught the eye on the runway and intrigued as it rushed by. The abstract print showed through diaphanous layers of silk chiffon, but it’s only when the skirt unfurls that you get the full picture.

Computers off, brushes and palettes out, the studio hand-painted this print to catch the dragonflies in motion. At the neckline, intricate, detailed drawings depict sets of tiny dragonflies before metamorphosing through the skirt with an ombre effect – some have a paisley pattern etched in their wings before the hem becomes a bold overlap of graffiti-style brushstrokes.

Pretty as a picture but mysterious at first sight, dance like the dragonflies and watch them take flight. The End
