Today we launch our new collection for 2017, Belvoir. Inspired by and named after Belvoir Castle, an English stately home where the campaign was also shot.
The British summer lies at the collection’s heart: painterly florals and feminine colour are juxtaposed with English eccentricity. This vision flourished for Matthew at the castle. Hours spent discovering the house’s heirlooms and photographing its interiors resulted in the collection’s prints and palette. The hero print, Regal Monkeys, is the most explicit ode, with its key found in a castle cabinet. The Rutland family emblem of the peacock (a motif shared with MW) repeats throughout. The quirky addition of monkeys dangling from damask add a playful tone. The Tapestry print is a similar medley of styles – naive patterns first seen on the rug of a ballroom have influenced hand-painted drawings that patchwork together for a unique, bohemian appeal.
“Opulent, decorative prints and the soft, feminine silhouettes to transport you into a long, hot summer ahead…”

The chinoiserie wallpapers of the Kings Rooms were painted by hand in the 18th century. This attention to detail and colour palette influenced the Duchess Garden print which combines the floral tropes typical of chinoiserie patterns with woodpeckers and blue tits, all painted in the studio.
Silhouettes are feminine and languid. The prints are best showcased in the diaphanous train of the parachute gown or the bohemian button-through shirt dress. Skin is exposed through clever cut-away on the torso of a jumpsuit or the high splits of a midi skirt.
The women of the castle, the Manners sisters and their mother, the Duchess of Rutland, are a force of nature. Having worn Matthew’s designs for many years, it is their spirit and unique sense of fun that encapsulate the MW woman of the season. The Duchess commented, “I am so inspired by this collection. It has taken so many elements of my home and threaded them through so many garments. It’s such a great honour for the family.”
