Durbar Collection for Osborne & Little
Today marks the launch of Matthew’s fourth collection of wallpapers and fabrics, Durbar. Created in collaboration with Osborne & Little it conjures up images of India with a vibrant, contemporary twist.
“I wanted to pay subtle homage to India while keeping each design usable and workable in any space.”
A palette of cerise, teal, turquoise and jade is combined with calm neutrals and metallics. For the first time, the wallpaper collection is available to shop from our online boutique. Here, Matthew talks us through key prints and their origins.
“India has been a constant source of inspiration to me and so it seemed fitting to base a collection around one of my creative passions as we celebrate 20 years of our label.”
“A toile is such a classic design with a recognisable scenic repeat… I wanted my version to have a modern and contemporary twist. The pattern was drawn and then painted by hand. It is made up of whimsical scenes which up close show a light-hearted take on Indian life but from afar, have the same effect as a classic toile de jouy.”
“I never tire of the peacock’s majestic, symmetrical beauty. I wanted to capture its essence but in a fresh new way so set about a graphic repeat pattern using solid blocks of colour and treating the design as if it were a fine, intricately-woven lace.”
“This design makes me smile. It’s playful, optimistic and I love it’s naive almost woodblock print-like qualities. In bold colours I’d use for a children’s room or in the chic metallic palette it feels very grown up and sophisticated.”
“This pattern is bold, bright and beautiful. These were my three buzz words when working on the print. I love the network of flora, fauna and aged temples hidden within. It gives the paper an aged, almost vintage quality.”
“Creating this wallpaper was a real passion project. It features a photographic collection of my framed butterflies that I’ve collected over the years. I love the contemporary effect and drama this paper would bring to any room. I’ll no doubt be using it at home and layering even more imagery on top of it so it’s almost like an ever-changing mood board!”
“For me, this print sums up the ‘Durbar’ collection. It is a classical print repeat for walls but its motifs give it a fresh spin. It’s a network of hearts, butterflies, insects and flowers snaking and interlinking across the design, originally seen in our Spring 2016 collection. I would happily use this design in any room from bathroom to bedroom to give some character and playful personality.”
