Tea at Balthazar
Just as the summer collection starts to arrive, we launch an afternoon tea today inspired by the same aesthetic at Balthazar, London. Each bespoke cake is an interpretation of the prints, colours and vibe of the SS15 collection which references the relaxed glamour of Marie Helvin in the David Bailey book, Chasing Rainbows. Matthew talks us through the project…
“This is my first foray into food but I’m always up for a challenge. It’s nice on these horrible grey days to have an indulgent moment. I wanted to keep to the traditions of the afternoon tea with all the usual treats but add my spin on it so we set about adding cakes and pastries which evoked a long, hot summer. Pastries are decorated with butterflies and flowers and the rose pink cocktail is very me.”
“It’s such a british tradition and a real luxury. It was fun interpreting ideas from my latest collection into cakes and cocktails.”
“I’ve been a fan of Balthazar in New York for many years so it’s great to have one closer to home. I plan to take my parents over Fashion Week to see what they think and no doubt will take my girlfriends too – I am sure the afternoon tea will flow nicely into MW cocktails at the bar!”
It’s set to be the perfect Fashion Week tonic. And for just that visit, Balthazar have created an accompanying cocktail Chasing Rainbows, incorporating the floral elements and soft colours seen on the catwalk.
The Matthew Williamson Afternoon Tea will be available from Friday, 6 February until Friday, 1 May 2015, 3pm to 5pm every day (including weekends). Traditional Matthew Williamson Afternoon Tea is priced at £25 and the Chasing Rainbows Afternoon Tea is £35 per person.
