The English Rose Knows: Best Friend’s Wedding
We were never those girls who made veils out of pillowcases or hummed ‘One day my prince will come’ while sketching our dream gown and guest list. For one thing, my best friend was far too busy powering through the school sports pitch and subsequently the city boardroom. But I knew from the moment Mr D proposed with Burlington Arcade’s sparkliest diamond that, like so many other friends before her, she would want to find THE dress. And she would want it to be perfect.
Obviously I was there on hand, popping a champagne cork no sooner had he popped the question. I find the bridal glossy magazines overwhelm at first so we chatted more inspiration – is she Elizabeth Bennet empire line or Carrie Bradshaw corset? She wisely wants to stick to her standby silhouettes in which she stuns year in, year out, and crucially in which she caught the eye of Mr D two summers ago. So off we went to Matthew’s for more bubbles over bridal fittings. Remember, you’ll think your friend looks fabulous in everything. Be strategic. Be supportive. Help her hone in on THE one, just like you did with her boyfriends over the years. Think wow factor down the aisle versus comfort factor after rounds of speeches and dancing. Is she the sort who’ll be dancing on the ceiling? Then don’t let a train hold her back. Perhaps she shies away from tradition? Then go for an original kaftan silhouette and she’ll be the most unique bride of the summer.
Our decision is made but the secret’s safe with me. Wouldn’t want Mr D discovering before the big day…
