The English Rose Knows: Resolutions
I once resolved to never make a New Year’s Resolution. A resolution to stop making resolutions. I felt unique amongst my friends who gave up fun and fags at the toll of midnight. But this year is going to be different. I crave the new start. And as ever, my rules will be less deprivation, more motivation.
January is bleak enough without a detox. Although I’m not completely averse to the concept (Matthew and I went all zen in Goa last year), the month of darkest nights and no Christmas lights is not the time to try it. Instead, nourish your friendships. I’ve already planned a cocktail party to try out the skills I learnt from the barman at Le Saint Geran in Mauritius over the holidays. On the weekend, step away from the sofa and stimulate your mind. The Chapman Brothers’ retrospective Come and See is an assault on the senses.
But my real resolution this year is sartorial, of course. As Audrey Hepburn once said “Life is a party, dress like it.” After the thrills of festivities, you may feel an urge to hide under heavy layers of sombre-coloured wool… Step up, step out and strive for only outfits that set your heart racing. Defy convention – the Botanical print dress is the ultimate heart-lifter by day – pair with biker boots and leather jacket. Or just add a dazzling necklace or new season scarf to an otherwise muted ensemble. Take even just a pinch of Audrey attitude into 2014, and every day will be a party.

P.S. New year, new rose. My head is now based on a print from our Pre Spring collection in 2009.
