The English Rose Knows: Winter Escapes
Laughter is the sun that drives away winter. Victor Hugo was wise indeed. But now we’re reaching the depths of January, I can’t help feeling that a joyful laugh might be all the easier to find in warmer climes. Freckles on my face, sand between my toes, handsome pool boys at my beck and call… I digress, but I’m decided. It’s time to escape.
Matthew told me all about his trip to the Seychelles last February, and he’s just found paradise at Reethi Rah in the Maldives, but before I decide my destination, it’s my packing I need to pin down. When you’re wrapped in comforting layers of cashmere, skin tone fashionably pale, a bikini can make for a fearful prospect. My solution? Coral colour on my toes, a vivid print and remembering most of all that once you’re in the sun, swimwear feels like second nature. I’ll pack a few. Then for the rest – I go for options that work double duty: a jumpsuit pops over my bikini at breakfast but then it can last me right through to the evening (add an embellished clutch for cocktails). And most wonderfully, the print is pure holiday – oh, I could stare at this kaleidoscope of exotic pattern for hours… But I won’t, because I need to pack: a playsuit, vintage hippy dresses, denim cut-offs, silk shirts, sunglasses, a gown (you never know…). It’s time to jet away to my get away.
Fear not, I’ll be back before you know it, just bronzed and laughing from the sunshine.
